Reiki is a Japanese word for an ancient Tibetan healing system rediscovered in the early 1900’s, by a Japanese man named Mikao Usui. Therefore the most common and most widely used form of Reiki is called Usui Reiki. Since then, other forms of Reiki have been developed, and named accordingly.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: Rei, which means “God’s wisdom or Higher Power” and Ki which is the Japanese word for “life force energy” (The word Ki has also been commonly written as Qi or Chi). Therefore most people translate Reiki as Universal (God) Life Force Energy.

Anything that is living has life force energy circulating through it. Everyday stress in our lives may effect the natural flow of Ki in the body. Various emotional states may contribute to the disruption of this natural flow. Ki in the body may get depleted, stuck, or even accumulate in certain areas of the body in excess. This eventually may lead to various forms of illness in the body, mind and spirit. A Reiki treatment restores and balances the natural healing process. Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and spirit.

A Reiki Treatment is simple and non-invasive. A Reiki practitioner places their hands a few inches above the body (some practitioners use hands on the body). Reiki is channeled through the practitioner’s hands and directed to the client, particularly along the seven major chakras (energy centers) and other areas of the body.

Since Reiki is energy, there is no need to remove clothing or jewelry in order to be effective, although some people prefer to remove shoes and jewelry for extra comfort and less restriction.

Can you “feel” Reiki energy? Some people CAN and some people CANNOT. This depends on whether or not the person is “sensitive” to the energy, even on a particular day. Some people have experienced or made comments that they feel:

  • Warmth coming from the practitioners hands
  • Tingling sensation in one or more parts of their body
  • Warmth (most often) or cold (particularly in cases where their may be inflammation in a particular area of the body.

During a session it is common to:

  • Fall asleep
  • Go into a meditative state of mind
  • Deeply relax
  • You may talk if you wish, but most people prefer to be quiet and let Reiki take them into a comfortable state of relaxation.

Immediately after a session, it is common to experience one or more of the following:

  • Calm, and relaxed
  • More energy
  • Occasionally less energy (this can be the effect of an occasional “cleansing” effect Reiki may have on some people. That is why it is important to drink lots of fresh water for a few days after a treatment and get rest.
  • Clear minded
  • Centered and grounded in the body
During the first few weeks after a session (especially where there was a series of three or more sessions in sequence) some people have reported one or more of the following:
  • A personal insight into their life events.
  • Ability to make clearer choices.
  • Freedom to communicate in an area where they normally felt stopped.
  • A new opportunity was presented to them in an area of importance.
  • Felt inspired to be healthy.
  • Felt more positive or ambitious regarding an area of concern.
  • Willingness to confront an issue in their life that they previously were unwilling.
  • Felt stronger emotionally.
Remember: Reiki has a cumulative effect (as does prayer). Although one treatment can effect you in a positive way, having a series of treatments will support the natural process of life as it occurs.
